Why I Never Quote Before I Read...

Jul 20, 2012 by

If you ask for one of three services, I can quote you a price right up front. An A&R is always $500, a proposal is always $5,000 (industry standard), and I charge $150 an hour for mentoring or consultation. For anything else, I never quote before I read. And I hear you ask me “why?”. If you meet a ghostwriter or editor who will indeed quote long before they’ve seen your material, you are not dealing with a professional. You are dealing with a (most likely) hungry freelancer. Someone who does not quite know what they’re doing, and is competing with every other freelancer out there. Trivia: If you are gathering prices and mine is the lowest, I take that to mean I need to raise mine. No project can be accurately priced until I’ve looked at...

When NOT to Write a Book

Jul 16, 2012 by

Ahah, got your attention, eh? Yes, I am actually going to tell you when it is a severe waste of time and money to write a book. It’s actually very simple, so this will be a short post. You should not write a book when you have nothing to say. That’s it. You’d think it’d be common sense, but alas, it is not. Far too many people come to me with the thought that they “should” write a book, and need to write a book, when in fact, they have very little to share. This is not to say they have uninteresting lives, or aren’t knowledgeable, or in some cases actually quite brilliant in their respective fields, but without something new, different and interesting to say, you do not have a...

Courting The Flame

Jul 10, 2012 by

The book came out June 22nd, and I’m a bit late on the ball here, but this is one of the most fascinating romances you will ever read. Diana DeCameron is a deeply compelling writer, and having met with her I must say, an absolutely enchanting woman. If you don’t really read romance, this is still a book to check out – it doesn’t quite fit the formula, and I feel the book’s all the better for it. Check out the synopsis and back cover at Muse It...

Meet The Annas: A Musical Novel...

Jul 6, 2012 by

Today’s free Nook book brings up an interesting question: What do we expect from e-books today? When I saw the title, my mind instantly assumed there was some kind of media associated with the book, and I found myself a bit disappointed when I read the description and it turned out to be a simple title twist. I was excited about the idea of a musical novel, without even having known what to expect. So what would that have meant? Would it have been like a musical, with random pages playing songs instead of showing text? Would it have been like a pop-up book, with music or video you could play when reaching the end of each page, or the start of each chapter? Would there simply have been a musical interlude in the middle of...
